Why do the boots in Heels Class dance extend above the ankle and have an open toe?
If you’re new to ‘Heels Class’ dance, you might wonder why the boots worn for this dance style look different from normal dance shoes. The higher shaft and open toe aren’t just a fashion choice – they serve an important function.
Why do the dance boots in Heels Class extend above the ankle?
Heels Class involves movements such as walking, body rolls, weight shifts, pirouettes and controlled spins in high heels. The boot-like design provides additional support around the ankle and helps dancers feel more secure and stable whilst moving.
The higher shaft also ensures that the shoe stays firmly on the foot during movement, whilst the structured construction gives the dancer a greater sense of control. This is particularly helpful for dancers who are just learning to move confidently in heels.
Why are they open at the front?
The open toe area is designed to allow freedom of movement for the toes and forefoot. In Heels Class lessons, dancers frequently move their feet, point their toes and shift their weight onto the balls of their feet. An open front allows these movements to flow naturally without restricting the toes. Closed, pointed boots would bend at the front and restrict the sliding movement at the knees.
It also ensures better contact between the dancer and the floor, allowing the foot to move and articulate more freely.
Specially developed for Heels Class lessons
The Heels Class boots therefore combine ankle support, stability, flexibility and freedom of movement. They are designed for dance styles such as Heels Class, Commercial and Showdance, where the dancer needs both stability in heels and the freedom to express movements through the foot.
Important: These boots are not designed as typical salsa or bachata shoes. Their construction and sole are specifically tailored to Heels Class lessons and related dance styles.
